Effective Natural Treatment for Psoriasis: A Personal Journey and Diet Change

Diet consisting of fruits and vegetables used in natural psoriasis treatment

Want a simple way to stop psoriasis in its tracks without creams or medications? If so, this might just be for you. I sometimes have patients who have varying degrees of psoriasis and I am fully aware of how difficult it is to treat them, but I have had some success with a treatment so simple and inexpensive, that it would be a crying shame for more people not to try it.

My Personal Struggle with Psoriasis

Let me start by telling you a little anecdote.I had had psoriasis on my head and at the top of my thighs for the whole of my later teenage years and early twenties. I had the classic round, red, flaky and particularly irritating patches of skin that so characterize psoriasis. I had put on all sorts of creams from the doctor and nothing had got rid of it and was resigned to having it as a permanent fixture on my skin.

The Unexpected Relief in Uganda

That all changed when I went to Uganda for a month to do some research. At some point during the trip, they all just went and I presumed it had something to do with the climate, the dramatic change of environment or a result of the extreme stress of the trip.

The Unwelcome Return and Revelation

Fast-forward twenty years and like a bolt out of the blue, they came back. In exactly the same position! But this time more of them - below the arm pit, at the top of the arm, at the top of the thigh and on the side of the calf muscles. Knowing a little bit more about the body than I did back in my twenties, I had an inkling about why this might have happened and why it was now back.

The Diet That Made a Difference

The Uganda trip took away the psoriasis not because of climate, nor the environment and nor the stress. It was the diet. We had stayed the whole time in a pretty tough slum a few hours from Kampala and we had eaten what the locals ate every meal. Matoke (green bananas), ground nuts and greens. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. And it was that change in what was up until that time a 'typical' diet that I seemed to share with a lot of people, which caused the internal process of removing the psoriasis.

You may be wondering how can I be so sure of this. Well, it disappeared again when I changed my diet. We live in Africa but not the part where they eat Matoke. We are in the north surrounded by Morocco and most of the food we eat everyday comes across the border. This makes it particularly fresh in general. So we tried a change in diet - actually not much of a change. I stopped eating anything with sugar (natural sugar was okay) and all processed foods but continued to have 3 meals a day as normal. To this we added a blended mixture of the following fruit and vegetables 3 times a day.

The Specifics of the Psoriasis-Fighting Diet

  • Swiss chard

  • Spinach

  • Broccoli

  • Cauliflower

  • Celery

  • Sweet potato

  • Courgette (zucchini)

  • Parsley

  • Squash

  • Carrots

  • Banana

  • Grape

  • Pear

  • Lemon

  • Pineapple

  • Apple

  • Orange peel

My Experience with the Diet and Psoriasis

Now, I'm normally not a big fan of smoothies as I think that they can do damage to the digestive process in some people over time but I figured I would try it out. The fruit and vegetables were uncooked (again not something I normally recommend but hey) but peeled and prepared for the blender. As for quantity - enough blended liquid to fill a glass so small amounts of each of the above added with water. If some of the ingredients were not available, we just used what we had. After 3 days the psoriasis had dramatically changed and was no longer red nor raised. After a week the patches only appeared as skin discolorations and no characteristics of psoriasis at all.

Is This Natural Solution for Everyone?

Now one thing I know for sure is that we are all different on the outside and inside. This won't work on everyone with psoriasis, but it may if your diet is not what it should be. It probably works better if the psoriasis you have is not widespread. It may be worth a try anyway because it is hardly a harmful treatment and I have tried this several times on patients and it worked.
